The Yasuni Ishpingo Tambococha Tiputini Trust Fund (Yasuni ITT Trust Fund) initiative

This trailblazing initiative has been set-up to protect the most bio-diverse area on the planet from exploitation for oil. Yasuniforever believes that if this initiative is successful it not only represents a positive step for Ecuador, its population and its wildlife, but is also new way of thinking about what is valuable in the world and how we can leave a world fit for generations to come. By publicising this initiative and seeking to make it a world wide phenomena, Yasuniforever not only seeks to raise money and support, but also make it harder for it to fail.

What is Yasuni ITT?
Yasuni is the name of a rain forest in Ecuador and Ishpingo, Tambococha and Tiputini are three areas which have been identified for potential oil extraction.

Why support the Yasuni ITT initiative?

  • Yasuni is one of the most bio-diverse spots on Earth
  • One hectare in Yasuni contains more tree species than are native to the whole of North America
  • Ecuador will indefinitely forego the extraction of 846 million barrels of oil
  • Avoidance of 407 million metric tons of CO² emissions due to non-extraction and burning of oil
  • Avoidance of 800 million metric tons of CO² from avoided deforestation
  • 78% of Ecuadorian citizens support the Yasuni Initiative
  • The Yasuni ITT Trust Fund, is administered by the Multi-Partner Trust Fund Office (MPTF Office) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

How does it work?
It is estimated the oil beneath Yasuni ITT is valued at US$ 7.2 billion. If half of that value (US$ 3.6 billion) can be raised between now and 2013, then Ecuador will contribute the other half in lost earnings. The money from the international community will be spent on renewable energy projects, social programs, research initiatives, conservation, and reforestation projects.
